Hi there - my son is in Gr 1 French Immersion. Due to some staffing issues, they have not been bringing home homework or started a reading program yet. I would like to start one at home. I have a phonics system for teaching reading in English. Does anyone recommend a system for teaching reading in French? Thanks.

ANSWER: We use the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) from Australian Christian Academy which is totally phonics based and has many languages to choose from including French - how early in the program it starts I’m not sure but you could do a search for the Academy or the ACE and find their contact details - they are based in Queensland and service all of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, etc. I think the program is brilliant. Well worth checking out. Tracy)

ANSWER: They must learn concepts of print. Show them we read left to right, titles of books, the front the back of books…things like that. We think kids know this stuff, many do not have a clue. Start with teaching them the letters of the alphabet, no writing, just listening and looking. Letter sound correspondence, this is an m, the sound is mmmm….then ask, what letter, m…what sound, mmmm? Vowels last. Then segmenting and blending the sounds to make words. m a t, the sounds…..say it slow…m a t….then put sounds together, what word….mat! All orally at first. Encourage lots of talking and chatting, especially after a book you read to them. This will build vocabulary, show and tell to give them opportunities to talk, use vocabulary, you must always model correct English. Put the names of objects around the classroom…door, chair..concrete examples of words….apple..show a picture, then show a real one. Multiple exposure to vocabulary is key as well as practice. Their level of English proficiency should determine where to start with their reading/phonics. If they do not speak ANY English, silent phase, that’s a whole other story…. A good book to get is right here. Excellent. I use it constantly. Good luck to you! http://www.amazon.com/Direct-Instruction-Reading-Douglas-Carnine/dp/0131123084)

Is it still being taught in school? I remember having to study Phonics from first grade to fourth grade. Are children being taught the basic phonetics of words?

ANSWER: I love this question. I’ve been asking it since I moved to maryland and saw that my kids were learning sight words instead of truly learning how to break the work down phonetically like I learned in school. Thankfully now, they are in private school and are no longer learning how to simply memorize words and are in fact learning phonics. Great Question.)
